Virtual Memory Settings in XP

Not unlike earlier versions of the Windows Operating System (OS), XP uses your computers hard disk drive to store data in what it calls a paging file or virtual memory when actual memory Random Access Memory (RAM) gets too full. Information in memory, but not currently being used is written to the paging file and then recalled into physical memory (RAM) when needed. In previous versions of the Windows Operating System, the paging file has been called the Swap file. The problem with this arrangement is that XP spends time resizing the paging file to maximize the combination of physical and virtual memory, which tends to slow down overall system performance. You can take control of this process away from XP by setting the size of the paging file. The net result will be an increase in system performance. more
