Taking Control of File Sharing

Sharing of files and folders can be managed in two ways. If you choose simplified file sharing, your folders and their contents can be shared with everyone on your network or workgroup. Or, you can make your folders private. This is how folders are shared in Windows 2000. However, in Windows XP Professional, you can also set folder permissions for specific users or groups of users. To do this, you must first change the default setting, which is simple file sharing. To change this setting, follow these steps. more

Transferring Files and Settings

At some point in time, you'll be in the market for a newer computer. Something faster with more bells and whistles than what you currently own. When that day comes, and trust me it will, you'll undoubtedly want to transfer your files and other settings from your old computer to your new one, and there are several ways to do so. You could use a commercially available program like PCMover from Laplink, or Intellimover from Detto. Both of these programs work well and are easy to use. Both programs sell for just under $50.00 and come complete with cables to connect your old computer to your newly acquired one. Windows XP comes complete with a File and Settings Transfer program that also works well, too. The only downside to using XP's built in program is that you'll need to purchase what is called a "Nul-Modem" serial cable and you'll have to have serial ports on both computers, or USB ports on both the old computer and the new computer. Check out Radio Shack, Staples, or Best Buy. One or the other should stock a variation of the Nul-Modem that will accommodate both of your machines. Worth the savings. The File and Settings Transfer Wizard describes the cable you need when you click on the link in the sentence Learn more about connecting your computers, and also allows you to do the transfer using a network if your have or are on one. more

Turn My Computer Into a Menu

As I go about my day, one of the things I open frequently is My Computer, which shows me all of the drives on my computer, like the floppy drive [A:], the Hard Drive [C:], and others that include DVD and CD drives and removable drives. Here's a way to change the display that you see when you click on Start and then on My Computer, so that a menu of My Computer items appear as your mouse pointer touches your My Computer link. Give it a try. I think you'll find it much quicker and easier to access the items in My Computer. more
